Description of the aquarium:
Lake Malawi
Tank size:
113cm x 50cm x 60cm = 270 liters ~ 71 gallons (us)
Specific features:
- The special shape of scubabay Basin is of course an eye-catcher, where it also brings some obstacles from the technical side with them.
- The AQ has a bottom hole (to the filter) and a frosted-mirrored supply shaft.
- The glass thickness is 8mm, float glass.

Aquarium decoration:
To protect the glass floor from damage, I first introduced a layer of sound insulation and then placed a tailored, acrylic glass plate (thickness 4mm) thereon.

Since Malawi it may prefer a little dim, I have taken from a light or white sand distance.
The ground consists of a stone gray aquarium sand, with a grain size from 0.4 to 0.8 mm. Total 25kg were processed and the coating thickness is approx 6,0cm.
The sand was obtained from the company Schicker Mineral GmbH.

A slow-release fertilizer in the soil reason was, logically, not mixed due to non-existent plants.
Adapted to the natural habitat of the Mbuna, I have refrained from any plant and focused me on the stone scenes. The term Mbuna means "living in the rocks", although in this case something needs to be differentiated.

(To some "green" to bring in and plant life, you would certainly be able to use Anubias barteri but my AQ should as far as possible be realistic).

Special features of the facility:
As the back wall Slim jewel granite was installed. Due to the special shape of the aquarium, the blank is in this case been a challenge. The tool was a jigsaw (fine blade) is used. The cut edges are then sealed with black acrylic paint.

A total of 90 kg breaking stone are processed. The stones stand directly on the acrylic glass plate and only after the sand has been filled. (Bonds are not stones, but that's stacked this definitely can not slip).
On the left side the stones reach 5cm under the water surface and on the right I have deliberately left some more swimming space.

Caves and hiding places are sufficient between the stones, so that later the ♂ can also stake out their territories.

Aquarium equipment:
The illumination is only possible via LED RGB Stripes by the company Barthelme, with a total length of 220cm.
The total output is about 30 watts, with a 12 volt power supply. The control takes place via the MS35 controller, with appropriate sunrise, sunset and cloud simulation.

The filtering is done via an external filter on the manufacturer Eheim; Type "Experience 350". This has a pumping capacity of 1,000 l / min, thus ensuring a sufficient circulation of the water.

At the filter outlet, a diffuser is attached, which supplies the pool with oxygen, produces a good surface movement and even already has a certain flow.

The flow in the night I deliberately issued, can thus withdraw and rest the fish. In Malawi, there is indeed a certain continuous flow, but even there fish to be looking for a quiet Rückzugort.

The cooling system is a self-made with two fans of the brand Sunon Maglev, each producing 70m³ volume flow. The base is a laminated board and the cutouts of the fans I have tailored accordingly.
The system runs on low voltage - 12 volts and is connected to the H-Tronic Temperature Controller. Above a temperature of> 27.0 ° C, the system regulates down to 23.5 ° C, and then switches off automatically. +

PS: a rod heaters etc. I do not use, because there is the room temperature and the heat of the external filter, a constant temperature of 23.5 ° C.

Due to the size of my AQ, I decided for a species tank with pseudotropheus saulosi. The beautiful colors of the animals (golden yellow / orange, or bright blue) have fascinated me.
With a total length of about 7 to 9 cm the Pseudotropheus are also not too big for my pelvis.

As stocking I have decided for 3m and 7W. Since I bought first 10 juveniles, will decide in the near future if the desired ratio also applies.

Water parameters:

- The values ​​are determined on a regular basis with a JBL droplet test.

- The water change is weekly and is about 1/3 of the volume. The "bucket hauling" I resolved from the beginning otherwise. In the basin one comes Eheim 1046 centrifugal pump to pump out the water. As the guest toilet is just a few meters, this is done really fast.
In order then to fill the pool again, I have installed on the faucet, a Gardena-Perlstrahl thread with aerator. We then been attached a normal Gardena coupling and refilled the pool with fresh water.
Everything is quick and easy and done in a very short time, without even a drop lands on the floor.
There is 2x daily fed with alternating foods:
- Tropical Malawi flake food,
- Tropical Spirulina Flakes,
- Tropical Spirulina granules,
- Aquatic Nature Excel Color,

And 1x per week is announced fasting.
Soon I will also offer pickle because I have had good experiences with in my previous company Aquarium.
Further information:
I would like from my experience, about the maturing of tanks, report.
In some years of experience I can draw as aquarists, however, I had been a community aquarium with a certain amount of plants. Thus, ammonium, nitrite and nitrate could form after some time to retract the pelvis.

Of course I was questioned a lot of well-read and much in my new Malawi Project. Therefore, my procedure was as follows:

- Set up
Pour water -
- Daily some flake food (finely crumbled)
- Check every 2 days water values
- And wait ... :-)

Until the 22nd day the water was still "sterile", or were the values ​​with the JBL Water Test unmeasurable.
Without further ado, I decided to bring in a higher dosage of ammonium to speed up the process.
I took Hirschhornsalz (raising agents), gave the corresponding ratio converted and dissolved in water and then the desired concentration in the basin.

Unbelievable what happened (!). All values ​​were in a very short time in the air and within 16 days, the running-in phase of the nitrite peak was over, survived and the basin was thus retracted.
