Gravel:
25kg Wall Sand

Fairly distributed irregularly. Wherever the plant is available to the ground at the deepest (guess 7-8cm), elsewhere in the basin, it will hardly be 3cm. The substrate should consist of Malawi of sand or very fine gravel, since almost all of Malawi's like to dig in the sand and filter this also through the gills to make so hunt for micro-organisms in the sand.

Too large a grain can go wrong and get stuck in the gills of the gravel. Also on coral sand should be avoided, too bright for a very sharp edge on the other, and thus risk of injury to the gills of the fish.

I opted for the least expensive alternative fine masonry sand from the hardware store. The relatively dark and not too fine. The dirt is when the fish dig themselves indeed put back and not spend hours driving through pools ...

I have washed the sand previously not separately. Were for 3-4 hours a rather dull-brown soup in the pelvis, but within a few hours the vast majority of small particles have set, the next morning the water was again crystal clear. Of course you should make sure that the sand does not contain any kind chemical additives such as pesticides, which could end badly otherwise.
Plants:
Three small Anubias, plants need not be in Mbuna Basin, but they do not hurt, too. Growing up on / between the stones and are quite sturdy and come with little light and nutrients. In addition, the plants should contain toxic or bitter substances, so they are actually nibbled from nothing.

Amazon sword plant, native to South America and may therefore actually more acidic and soft water ... moreover they are quite undemanding and easy to maintain in good lighting. Let's see how long they stay in my pelvis. ;)

Special features of the facility:
Rear wall and side parts brands Eigenbau

150kg "Nero Ebano" anthracite marble quarry stone

The rear panel and the side panels were made so that they can be completely hinterschwommen of the fish. Two separate stone constructions left and right, as well as the spacious hinterschwimmbare at the internal filters and side walls Rear wall facilitate the formation area under dispute taps and form refuges.

To build the back wall I have used commercially available polystyrene and Portland cement CEM II / A-LL. Otherwise you can use the CEM I, of everything else I would stay away. The designation of the cement indicates that this addition Portland cement clinker still 6-20% (this is the "A") contains additives which are therefore limestone with low organic content in this case "LL". If the cement is still chromate arm should actually can not go wrong. With everything else I was as I said cautiously for aquarium use ... what might be contained in fly ash or blast furnace slag for toxins, we do not know exactly sooo ...

Pools must be covered even from the outside, so that one no longer looks at the Styrofoam from the rear wall. For this I just wanted to paste from the outside with black furniture foil.

Lighting:
1x Tropical River 54 W ... is in principle entirely appropriate, barely red and orange in the spectrum included. One sees the range that it is a 3-band fluorescent tube and no full spectrum. But since it is in principle suitable, I will stay until further notice at this bulb. Approximately 10 points in the color rendering index no investment of more than 20 € I have first value.

Lighting time 10-22 Clock

The tube is also wrapped with aluminum foil to approximately half to reduce the brightness. Since some of the well-kept from me fish do not occur in water depths greater than 15 m, the lighting should be quite subdued. In addition, the bulbs in the optimal case should have red and orange color components hardly have because they are absorbed up to these depths.

Through the wrapping of aluminum foil and a strong surface movement I have also managed to produce the light bars in defiance at the edges of a "natural" play of light and shadow through the water surface. (Under natural conditions created the sun, which is a celestial object with measurable expansion of about 0.5 ° namely, corresponds to a beam of rather a point light source. The light cone spreads out spherically and the illuminance reduces with the square of the distance. Completely of course is that the water surface shadows and bright reflexes raises the reason because of the refraction of light at the surface and the movement of the same. This play of light and shadow in the aquarium but under a light tube is difficult to produce, because the tube is too large surface illuminates, the light cone is not absolute expands spherically and the illuminance in the short distance decreases rather linearly. All this has the consequence that the shadow from the one piece of fluorescent tube would be thrown in theory, is superimposed by the light of a different point of the arc tube . If one covers enough so that over the entire area on the light emerges only few cm narrow cracks, it is in these areas still somewhat ... ...)

Lighting break: Is there not with me ... reduced only by increasing the switching frequencies, the life of the fluorescent tube.

A special lunar or night light there is not with me. Through a window in the dining area always something light from the front door of the house next to the living room lighting, ranging as "Moonlight" and is totally free, grinning.
Filtration:
2x Amtra Wave Black Box 400
EHEIM Biopower 240 internal filter
Sera F700 internal filter at the bottom
Filter volume almost 20l
(Tonröhrchen-> zeolite> Filterwatte)

Pump output approx 2.850l / h

Both the set associated Amtra internal filters are located behind the two rear halves. The other two filters behind the side panels, with the sera filter is on the ground and provide some flow in the bottom portion, while with their Pumpausläufen ensure the other three for proper surface movement. By this arrangement I have to make me not worry that water remains behind the rear wall and fault.

A total of 9 times net content per hour is circulated about.
Other equipment:
Thermometer, drain hose for water, Eime + watering can for filling, digital Weights batching for measuring the soda additions

Stocking:
Stocking is more or less catastrophically ...

I thought I would:
Labidochromis Caeruleus Yellow 2.4
relatively peaceful mbuna, which does not form grounds. Adult males can be 10-15cm in size. No "right" Mbunas, eat more insects & Co. Deposits at depths between 15 and 25m. Life in the rock biotope with sandy areas.

Labidochromis sp. Mbamba Bay 1.3
Males defend a territory for mating, otherwise relatively peaceful Mbuna. Males about 8-9cm in size. Nursery eaters. Deposits at depths between 15 and 30m. Life in Felslitoral and partly also in the transition zones.

Labidochromis chisumulae 2.2
Relatively peaceful, small Mbuna. Does not form grounds. Male 6-8cm. Deposits at depths between 3 and 20 meters. Inhabited sediment-rich part of the transition zones and eats insects. Rarely commercially.

Maylandia / Metriaclima lombardoi 4.8
Absolutely not peaceful Mbuna. Male territory forming and quite aggressive. Males reach a size of 10-12 cm. Deposits in Felslitoral between 7 and 25m depth. Eats nursery. Pool should have well-structured rock structures and be sufficiently large for the high intraspecific aggression.

Sciaenochromis fryeri 1.3
Fish-eating predators the transition zones between 5 and 30m. Males are 15 to 20cm tall. Males rather territorial, occupying them to leave hunting trips a cave. Females swim around in schools through the Litoral and prey on young Mbunas.

The compilation with the Labis + fryeri and Pseudotropheus was not optimal. The best should the soft Ps..

In addition, it has been found that some times is not the stocking, as it was intended.
Am relatively sure based on my observations, that it is accepted as instead of 2.4 and 2.2 with the Yellows and the Chisumulae by 3.3 and 3.1.
The group of 4 orange fish which I Ps. Lombardoi bought turns out to be Ps. Saulosi, a male turns straight. Whether "come out" even more males in this group remains to be seen.
Thus we have a not quite clear 1.3-harem of Ps. Saulosi and a 0.8 set of Ps. Lombardoi. If my lombardoi females should wear, I have to make no head if it is a hybrid, it's definitely a ...

Desired stocking from me now would be:
S. fryeri 1.3
L. caer. Yellow 3.7
L. chisumulae 3.7
L. Mbamby Bay 1.3
plus maybe a Synodontis ... let's see, how to get there ...

Water change weekly about 45% -50%

From the line pretty clean, germ-free, soft water comes with little pollution:
Water analysis from suppliers
Feeding:
sera vipagran (crude protein 40.4%, crude fat 8.7%, crude fiber 3.4%)

sera vipachips (crude protein 32.4%, crude fat 7.5%, crude fiber 5.6%)

OSI Cichlid Flakes (46% crude protein, crude fat 7%, 4% crude fiber)

OSI Spirulina Flakes (41% crude protein, crude fat 4%, 6% crude fiber)

JBL Novo Rift ... should be something for Malawi algae eaters, but precise composition is not it.

Sera Spirulina Tabs (crude protein 48.2%, crude fat 8.6%, crude fiber 5%)

Frozen food homemade:
1 package sera FD mixpur (dry mix with Daphnia, Tubifex, Artemias Shrimps and bloodworms)
300g pollock, shrimp 250g, 1 carrot, 1 red pepper, 1 clove garlic, 2 lettuce hearts, 500g spinach, 300g peas, a few drops of olive oil, 1 Multivitamin + mineral tablet, gelatin

(Yes, bloodworms not come in because they are not for Malawi. This red Muelas were but already dried, yet cooked and shredded and are present only in small traces.)

North Sea shrimps

is fed in the morning and evening, sometimes this, sometimes that. Frostfutter preferably a day in front of the water change or in front of the water change.
Further information:
Due to the numerous hiding places and the many narrow chinks some pups will probably get through. Currently I have been at least 3-5 small mbuna babies in the basin, which previously show up as smart, not to be eaten. The little ones have now reached a size of 10-15mm, I guess. (The hunting instinct my p fryeri still seems to be okay, once a view of the little set the course immediately. But the little ones are then quickly away, as you can see ...)

Since I can not guarantee for species purity in my community tank (Malawi intersect wild with each other, because all kinds today have evolved in the lake from probably originally only 2 types), no fish will leave my aquarium, except possibly in the bowl of the cat .. ,

Some concern but makes me currently the S. fryeri Bock initially showed an eye turbidity, which is but subsided again, now very quiet and withdrawn behavior. Otherwise, no external abnormalities far noticed. Only that he was very withdraws, is very quiet and little eats, what can not be a good sign. But I am also not a fan of treatment on suspected with any of Medis and stuff. Blindwütiger use of chemical mace brings more harm than good ...
