Microsorum pteropus / Javafarn

Country of origin: Asia
Height 15-30 cm
Width 12-20 cm +
Lighting very small-size
Temperature 18-30 ° C
PH 5 to 8

The Java fern (Microsorum pteropus) is a very undemanding Wasserfarnart that grows under all conditions. Thrives best this Asian plant when it is tied to a root or a rock by means of a nylon thread. Should they still be planted in the ground, the rootstock due to possible spoilage must not be covered. Propagation is very easy, dividing the rhizome. On the underside of the leaves often form so-called sporangia (Studies of spores), with good care and optimal conditions are adaptive plants form at the blade tips.

With your Asian origin this plant has nothing to look for in a Malawi basin, due to their robustness and adaptability to all water conditions Microsorum pteropus Malawi aquarist is often also of "not waive plants ending" used.

Anubias nana barteri / dwarf Peer Journal

Country of origin: West Africa
Height: up to 50cm
Lighting conditions: little to average illuminance
Temperature: 18 to 28 ° C
PH: 5.5 to 9

The dwarf peer journal, lat .: Anubias nana barteri, named after the plant collector Charles Barter, is a common and popular just in Cichlidenbecken aquarium plant, mainly because of their straightforward attitude. Through their leathery leaf surface it is very suitable to put green accents in a cichlid tank. Anubias barteri reaches up to 50 cm high egg-shaped, lanceolate pointed, heart-shaped spreading. In natural habitat, the plant grows in shady to semi-shady, fast-flowing rivers and streams in the southeastern West Africa (Nigeria, Cameroon). There they grow adherently on large rocks or tree trunks, partially over water or also completely under the water surface.

Anubias are to be kept very simple, they thrive best when they are tied to a root or a rock by means of a nylon thread. Should they still be planted in the ground, the rootstock due to possible spoilage must not be covered.
Anubias thrive under adverse growing conditions, require little light, but large light supply leads to significantly faster growth with larger leaves. Water hardness and pH are negligible. Strong flow is advantageous, however, so be Anubia feels barteri at home in their natural habitat, the fast-flowing waters of the southeastern West Africa.

Anubias hastifolia / Spiesblättriges Speerblatt

Country of origin: West Africa
Height: up to 60cm
Lighting conditions: little to average illuminance
Temperature: 18 to 28 ° C
PH: 6 to 9

The spießblättrige Speerblat (Anubias hastifolia) is a rarely cultivated, quite floriferous species with stalked, leathery leaves and side shoots on the rhizome. The spreading are dreilappig-hastate lanceolate. Middle lobe reach 15 cm and side lobes up to 10 cm length. Distribution: West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Zaire).

These subspecies of Anubias is keeping very simple. Tied with a nylon thread on a stone it is just as well as cope with a pH to 9. Because of their bitter substances with little light, the plant is not particularly popular with bass, therefore very suitable for Cichlidenaquarien.

> <(((> Pseudotropheus saulosi 4/9 plus 4 survivors juveniles
> <(((> Labidochromis Hongi "Red Top" 1/4 plus a few very small Nachwuchshongis
> <(((> Synodontis petricola "dwarf" is not to distinguish 8 (gender)

-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------

> <((((> Pseudotropheus saulosi

A rather small permanent mbuna type. PSE. saulosi be approximately 7-9 cm tall and come, like many other species from Lake Malawi, only in this East African lake front (endemic).

The gender differences are clearly determined: The males are black / blue striped, the females are bright yellow-orange. The maternal mouthbrooders bring yellow-orange pups, where the goats until the reproductive age, gradually, recolor approximately over a period of 3-5 months, according to blue-black.

According to the list published here at Einrichtungsbeispiele.de these animals can be kept in tanks from 200 liters.

Pseudotropheus saulosi require many hiding places, possible rock formations up to the water surface. Harem attitude (more females than males) is recommended.
From my own experience I know that the aggression of an adult goat must necessarily spread over several females (> 3), as this can lead to deaths else.

Pseudotropheus saulosi are typical nursery eaters. Already in young animals this behavior can be clearly seen. Ballast kingdom (vegetable) feed is the protein-rich preferable to prevent intestinal diseases.
Pseudotropheus saulosi I believe are wonderful animals, perfectly suited just for the "Malawi Beginner".

-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------

> <((((> Labidochromis Hongi "Red Top"

This is just a rather small permanent mbuna type. The males of this species are about Labidochromis-8 - 9 cm, females 6 - 7 cm tall and come, like the other maternal mouthbrooders of Malawi, only in this East African lake front (endemic).

On the east coast of Lake Malawi (Tanzania) are found the range of such magnificent Mbunaart. Hongis are found in different colors at the islands Lundo, Ngkuyo Iceland and Iceland as well as in Hongi Nkali Iceland, Undu Point and Undu Reef. The species lives at depths of between five and ten meters in Felslitoral.
I have, for the Hongi "Red Top" or "Red Fin" decided the red splash of color due, which occurs rather at Nkali Iceland.

The Gender discrimination is relatively simple: The male is more colorful while the female is more gray-brown and inconspicuous. As with all Mbunas the female assumes sole mouth brood care. After an "incubation period" of about three weeks about 20 juveniles are released from the mouth.

According to the list published here at Einrichtungsbeispiele.de these animals can be kept in tanks from 200 liters.

Labidochromis hongi require many hiding places, possible rock formations up to the water surface. Harem attitude is recommended.

Labidochromis hongi are like all Mbunas nursery eaters. Already in young animals this behavior can be clearly seen. Ballast kingdom (vegetable) feed is the protein-rich preferable to prevent intestinal diseases.

This Labbidochromis - type in my opinion wonderful representatives of small permanent Mbunas, just for the "Malawi Beginner" optimally and also for a "small" Malawi Basin (from 200Liter) suitable.

> <((((> Synodontis petricola "dwarf"

Synodontis petricola "dwarf" (dwarf) is a peace-loving, small constant catfish from Lake Tanganyika. Because the water levels of these two large lakes grave hardly differ, this catfish is also with us "Malawianern" increasingly popular.

These small social catfish feel most comfortable in a group with at least 5 animals, which they scour the whole day the aquarium for something to eat. [...]

I lead a TWW by about 50% when I can make it a week. If I let wait longer than 1 week on freshwater fish, I go more towards 80%, depending on how long is the time between TWW. So far I go very well with this strategy.
I give to every water change according to the change of water quantity Easy-Life to. I can only recommend!

Tropical Malawi
Hikari Cichlid Excel cichlids Spezialfutter medium pellets

A few word to the feed:

In the Great Lakes, the living animal is adapted to their respective given specific circumstances. The counterparties located in Malawi Mbunas have acquired a very specific feeding behavior and simultaneously develops its digestive organs afterwards. The digestive systems of most species are adapted to the Special Diet in their natural environment and come up with wrong food therefore only very inadequately cope.

Clean "eating technically" you can divide the living in the grave lakes cichlids into 4 groups, for Mbunas meet only the first three to:

1.) The nursery eater (Limnivore)
Limnivore feed in nature - and also in the aquarium - from algae nursery and the resident microorganisms.

2.) The omnivorous (omnivores)
Omnivore feed mainly on insects, snails, small crabs, as well as volunteers (see Limnivore) is on your menu

3.) The herbivores (Herbivore)
Herbivore feed purely vegetable, they specialize in vegetable food.

4.) The Carnivore (Carnivore)
Pure carnivores (Carnivore) do not occur in the Mbunas.

The sensitive nursery and omnivorous, so the first two groups can be held easily together. For the third group, the pure herbivores "individual attitude" is recommended because there can be no possibility of separation for the fish at feeding time in our still limited habitat.

But even in the attitude of the first two groups can be done much wrong in feeding. Most high population density in our aquariums and thereby caused everyday struggle for food ensures that Mbunas greedily absorb everything for food looks in some way - even if only animal food would be fed - fress greedy Mbunas would pounce on everything, but it unfortunately "pay" with a very short life, because their digestive tract is simply not suited for animal protein food. The internal organs of the animals would become obese, which the slow death of the favorites would result.
That is to say, who cares Mbunas: Stay away from animal feed, such as mosquito larvae, worms, flies, shrimp, fish coming from other basins, etc. I want to feed on the bad habit of beef heart did not go into here! Besides our water will be charged much less, if they are not animal feed.

Flake or granule feed containing much animal protein also results that Mbunas become fat faster and die earlier because up their intestinal tract is not suitable for this diet. Rich in protein include Sera granured, Tropical Tanganyika, Tetra Cichlid granules and standard feed (often "suitable for all ornamental fish" as described), these foods should not be fed because of their high protein content.

In contrast, due to their low proportion of animal fats, suitable foods such as JBL Novo Malawi, JBL Spiro Lina (all foods with high Spiro Lina-share), JBL Novo Rift, Sera granugreen, Tetra Pro Vegetable, Algae plates, but also fresh vegetables, such as lettuce, cucumber, spinach, zucchini, etc. (here must naturally enough - to be washed to keep exposure as low as possible with pesticidally active compounds - as hot as possible). Completely this list is of course not, there are many more suitable for Mbunas foods.

In these suitable for Mbunas foods, a sufficient proportion of animal protein is contained so that it does not need, so more harmful is to feed additional animal products. The foods described suffice completely to supply this food specialists with all necessities of life. Basically, the amount of crude protein clearly [...] should

> <((((> A few words about my stocking:

For those visitors of my side, who earlier over more commonly seen here should be known that I, in this 260Liter pool along with the Pse Saulosis've kept Pseudotropheus lombardoi, maylandia estherae and Synodontis Njassae.

Although I never had problems with this association, I have given these fish for the benefit of animals in "good hands" because for these species an attitude is recommended until 500 liters and upwards.

For newcomers here at EB.de I can highly recommend the list for the right tank size for Malawi cichlids that is widget here at device under Examples INTERACTIVE / DOWNLOADS / pool size for Malawi cichlids as .pdf.
